Summary

It all starts with an innocuous curiosity: at the Hotel de Verbier, a luxury hotel in the Swiss Alps, there is no Room 622。
This anomaly piques the interest of Joël Dicker, Switzerland's most famous literary star, who flees to the Verbier to recover from a bad breakup, mourn the death of his publisher, and begin his next novel。

Before he knows it, he's coaxed out of his slump by a fellow guest, who quickly uncovers the reason behind Room 622's erasure: an unsolved murder。 The attendant circumstances: a love triangle and a power struggle at the heart of Switzerland's largest private bank, a mysterious counter-intelligence unit known only as P-30, and a shadowy émigré with more money than God。

A Russian doll of a mystery crafted with the precision of a Swiss watch, The Enigma of Room 622 is Joël Dicker's most diabolically addictive thriller yet。

Just like The Truth of the Harry Quebert affair the story keeps twisting and turning for 563 pages while you gradually get a more complete idea of the events happening around the murder in room 622 so many years ago。 It is more fragmented and less chronologically told than Harry Quebert but still very captivating from start until end, containing many surprising twists。 The fact that there is an autobiographical part, smaller than you think throughout and only revealed in the translator’s notes, Just like The Truth of the Harry Quebert affair the story keeps twisting and turning for 563 pages while you gradually get a more complete idea of the events happening around the murder in room 622 so many years ago。 It is more fragmented and less chronologically told than Harry Quebert but still very captivating from start until end, containing many surprising twists。 The fact that there is an autobiographical part, smaller than you think throughout and only revealed in the translator’s notes, makes for an even more layered reading experience。 Even though the characters may be somewhat flat, I really enjoyed the overall clever plot。 。。。more

I enjoyed the premise and the plot twists。 Could have used an editor in the first half of the book, though--dragged a little。

The book’s motif of the author being a character is shades of Anthony Horowitz’s work but not imitative。 If you love reading Horowitz, you will devour this book。 Twists and turns abound。 All is not as it seems。 The story moves backward and forward in time layering in tantalizing bits whose purpose comes clear as the story unravels。 The great success of the book is when you find out who did it, you never suspected the guilty person。 A father and son both estranged and yet so alike。 Being massivel The book’s motif of the author being a character is shades of Anthony Horowitz’s work but not imitative。 If you love reading Horowitz, you will devour this book。 Twists and turns abound。 All is not as it seems。 The story moves backward and forward in time layering in tantalizing bits whose purpose comes clear as the story unravels。 The great success of the book is when you find out who did it, you never suspected the guilty person。 A father and son both estranged and yet so alike。 Being massively financially successful does not breed happiness。 People hurt each other intentionally and unintentionally just as we all do too often。 Excellent turns of phrase pepper the book。 A highly recommended read。 。。。more

This was a lot of fun。 I don't always love a book that moves around in the timeline like this one, but I think it was done well here and progressed the story and increased my anticipation of the ending。 This was really enjoyable journey, and I'm glad this was translated so that I could enjoy it。 This was a lot of fun。 I don't always love a book that moves around in the timeline like this one, but I think it was done well here and progressed the story and increased my anticipation of the ending。 This was really enjoyable journey, and I'm glad this was translated so that I could enjoy it。 。。。more

I was super excited to read this book- the synopsis sounds great and I feel like the bones of a great book are there。 However, something just got lost in translation。 I was expecting a murder mystery along the lines of Agatha Christie but instead I found myself reading a convoluted corporate conspiracy involving characters whose lives are just as complex。 All in all, I was just confused and given it is close to 600 pages, I decided to DNF at 20%。 I might attempt to read it again in the future be I was super excited to read this book- the synopsis sounds great and I feel like the bones of a great book are there。 However, something just got lost in translation。 I was expecting a murder mystery along the lines of Agatha Christie but instead I found myself reading a convoluted corporate conspiracy involving characters whose lives are just as complex。 All in all, I was just confused and given it is close to 600 pages, I decided to DNF at 20%。 I might attempt to read it again in the future because I really was looking forward to it so much (not to mention that cover is so pretty!) and if I do, I will be sure to update here。 A big thanks to Harper Collins Canada and NetGalley for giving me an arc。 All opinions are my own。 。。。more

Totally satisfying, with many turns and trap doors。 A novel that does exactly what it sets out to do, and does it well。 I've seen some complaints that the characters are unlikable, but there is a level of metafiction going on here, as the author-character informs us at the beginning。 (Macaire is clearly unsuited to run a bank--he doesnt even read his mail!) This is a novel that is written when an author on vacation wonders why a hotel does not have a room 622, and seems to be stretching his own creative legs while also mourning the loss of his publisher-friend。 The translator's note at the end is quite accurate, and pinpoints what I love about translated novels。 They must feel foreign, though in English。 I thought the translation was exceptional and captured the layers of metafiction quite well。I didn't pull for any character more than another, and don't even think I have a favorite character。 Maybe Wagner (haha)? But I loved how the various motivations and actions in the book kept making things worse。 A true car wreck worthy of rubbernecking。 If there was a slow part, it was the early in the week leading up to the murder。 Once I got to December 15, the night before the murder, I didnt want to stop reading and think I burned through the second half of the novel in a day and a half。 The revelations in the second half also resolved some of the concerns I had about certain characters and actions in the first half。 I can't say more without spoilers。Last, I'm not sure this novel is for everyone。 I would be careful with my recommendation。 It's for people who are willing to trust the author, and are willing to enter a world that is somewhat casual in its verisimilitude in order to tell a story that might be different than the one you were expecting。 。。。more

I absolutely loved TTATHQA。 I honestly felt this latest from Dicker is from a completely different author。 It’s bloated, messy, with poor characterisation and almost laughable prose。 I waded through the first 300 pages actually wondering if it was some kind of deliberate farce or plot device。 But no。 This is just excruciatingly bad。DNF at 350 pages - that’s about half way through😳Biggest disappointment of my reading year so far I’m afraid to say。

I enjoyed this book。 Jumps between characters and time lines。 Major twists in plot。 It was hard to put down at the end。

。。。more

Phew。 Quite the layered, oniony, matryoshka doll of a mystery。 Very much a feat of cleverness, for Joel Dicker the author, as well as the translator Robert Bononno, since this was originally published in French。 This is a zany book within a book within a murder mystery investigation: Both Moonflower Murders and The Word is Murder by Anthony Horowitz meets Knives Out。 It’s long… almost 600 pages! Very meta! As with several other books in the last year, this book blends the truth with fiction, what is memoir and what is story。 So for a murder mystery to also tackle that concept is admirable! I really liked this but would have liked it to be about 150 pages shorter… that said based on the final ~3 pages, I understand the intricate, convoluted, sprawling, sometimes rambling prior 572 pages :) 。。。more
